A World Cup in Our Own Backyard: Germany vs. Curaçao in Houston

Some sporting events are about the final score.

Others are about the memories you create long before the opening whistle.

Attending the FIFA World Cup match between Germany and Curaçao in Houston was one of those unforgettable experiences and not just because it was the world’s biggest sporting event, but because I was able to share it with the people who matter most.

This wasn’t simply a soccer match.

It was three generations of family coming together to experience history.

A Family Gathering Like No Other

One of the greatest blessings of the World Cup coming to the United States is having the opportunity to experience it close to home.

Our group included my wife, our children, parents, in-laws, and sister-in-law. Having everyone together transformed the event into much more than a sporting occasion. It became a family celebration.

As we made our way toward NRG Stadium, fans wearing jerseys from every corner of the world filled the streets. German supporters proudly waved black, red, and gold flags, while Curaçao fans brought incredible energy and Caribbean pride. Mixed among them were thousands of neutral fans simply enjoying the global celebration that only the FIFA World Cup can create.

You could hear conversations in dozens of languages, see children trading scarves, and watch complete strangers taking photos together simply because they shared a love of the game.

It reminded me that the World Cup isn’t just about football—it is about bringing the world together.

The Atmosphere Before Kickoff

Long before the players stepped onto the field, the excitement inside the stadium was electric.

The anticipation grew with every announcement. Music echoed throughout the stadium while fans sang, chanted, and proudly displayed their national colors.

Watching my kids take it all in was especially rewarding. These are the kinds of experiences they’ll remember long after they forget the score.

Seeing my parents and my in-laws enjoying the same moment made it even more meaningful. Three generations were sharing something that only happens once every four years—and even more rarely, just a short drive from home.

Ninety Minutes That Connected the World

When the national anthems began, the stadium fell into a remarkable silence before erupting into applause.

For ninety minutes, everyone became part of something much bigger than themselves.

Germany showcased the technical precision and discipline that has made them one of the world’s most respected football nations, while Curaçao played with incredible passion, determination, and pride, earning the admiration of supporters throughout the stadium.

Regardless of which team people supported, every great save, clever pass, and scoring opportunity drew a collective reaction from more than 70,000 fans.

That’s the beauty of the World Cup.

For a few hours, nationality takes a back seat to a shared appreciation for the game.

More Than Soccer

As wonderful as the match was, my favorite memories happened between the action.

Sharing laughs with family before kickoff.

Watching my children take pictures with fans from around the world.

Listening to my parents reminisce about World Cups they had watched decades earlier.

Seeing my in-laws experience the excitement of such a global event.

These small moments often become the biggest memories.

Why the World Cup Is Different

I’ve attended many sporting events over the years, but nothing compares to the FIFA World Cup.

Every match feels like a cultural festival.

The food, the music, the flags, the languages, the traditions, and the passion create an atmosphere unlike anything else in sports.

It isn’t simply about one country playing another.

It’s about celebrating what makes each culture unique while discovering how much we all have in common.

A Memory We’ll Always Share

As we walked out of NRG Stadium alongside thousands of smiling fans, I realized the final score wasn’t what would stay with me.

What I’ll remember is seeing three generations of our family sharing an experience that few people ever get to enjoy together.

Years from now, we’ll likely forget many of the details from the match.

But we’ll never forget walking into a World Cup stadium together, hearing the roar of the crowd, watching the flags wave, and realizing that for one incredible evening, the entire world had gathered in Houston.

Those are the moments that make travel—and life—so meaningful.

The FIFA World Cup gave us ninety minutes of football, but it gave our family memories that will last a lifetime.
