A World Cup in Our Own Backyard: Germany vs. Curaçao in Houston

Some sporting events are about the final score.

Others are about the memories you create long before the opening whistle.

Attending the FIFA World Cup match between Germany and Curaçao in Houston was one of those unforgettable experiences and not just because it was the world’s biggest sporting event, but because I was able to share it with the people who matter most.

This wasn’t simply a soccer match.

It was three generations of family coming together to experience history.

A Family Gathering Like No Other

One of the greatest blessings of the World Cup coming to the United States is having the opportunity to experience it close to home.

Our group included my wife, our children, parents, in-laws, and sister-in-law. Having everyone together transformed the event into much more than a sporting occasion. It became a family celebration.

As we made our way toward NRG Stadium, fans wearing jerseys from every corner of the world filled the streets. German supporters proudly waved black, red, and gold flags, while Curaçao fans brought incredible energy and Caribbean pride. Mixed among them were thousands of neutral fans simply enjoying the global celebration that only the FIFA World Cup can create.

You could hear conversations in dozens of languages, see children trading scarves, and watch complete strangers taking photos together simply because they shared a love of the game.

It reminded me that the World Cup isn’t just about football—it is about bringing the world together.

The Atmosphere Before Kickoff

Long before the players stepped onto the field, the excitement inside the stadium was electric.

The anticipation grew with every announcement. Music echoed throughout the stadium while fans sang, chanted, and proudly displayed their national colors.

Watching my kids take it all in was especially rewarding. These are the kinds of experiences they’ll remember long after they forget the score.

Seeing my parents and my in-laws enjoying the same moment made it even more meaningful. Three generations were sharing something that only happens once every four years—and even more rarely, just a short drive from home.

Ninety Minutes That Connected the World

When the national anthems began, the stadium fell into a remarkable silence before erupting into applause.

For ninety minutes, everyone became part of something much bigger than themselves.

Germany showcased the technical precision and discipline that has made them one of the world’s most respected football nations, while Curaçao played with incredible passion, determination, and pride, earning the admiration of supporters throughout the stadium.

Regardless of which team people supported, every great save, clever pass, and scoring opportunity drew a collective reaction from more than 70,000 fans.

That’s the beauty of the World Cup.

For a few hours, nationality takes a back seat to a shared appreciation for the game.

More Than Soccer

As wonderful as the match was, my favorite memories happened between the action.

Sharing laughs with family before kickoff.

Watching my children take pictures with fans from around the world.

Listening to my parents reminisce about World Cups they had watched decades earlier.

Seeing my in-laws experience the excitement of such a global event.

These small moments often become the biggest memories.

Why the World Cup Is Different

I’ve attended many sporting events over the years, but nothing compares to the FIFA World Cup.

Every match feels like a cultural festival.

The food, the music, the flags, the languages, the traditions, and the passion create an atmosphere unlike anything else in sports.

It isn’t simply about one country playing another.

It’s about celebrating what makes each culture unique while discovering how much we all have in common.

A Memory We’ll Always Share

As we walked out of NRG Stadium alongside thousands of smiling fans, I realized the final score wasn’t what would stay with me.

What I’ll remember is seeing three generations of our family sharing an experience that few people ever get to enjoy together.

Years from now, we’ll likely forget many of the details from the match.

But we’ll never forget walking into a World Cup stadium together, hearing the roar of the crowd, watching the flags wave, and realizing that for one incredible evening, the entire world had gathered in Houston.

Those are the moments that make travel—and life—so meaningful.

The FIFA World Cup gave us ninety minutes of football, but it gave our family memories that will last a lifetime.

A Weekend in New Orleans: Jazz, Seafood, and Southern Charm

Few cities have a personality as distinct as New Orleans. From the moment we arrived, the city seemed to move to its own rhythm—part jazz, part celebration, and part living history.

Our weekend was filled with incredible food, historic neighborhoods, live music, and the unmistakable energy of the French Quarter. It was a quick trip, but New Orleans has a way of making even a few days feel packed with memorable experiences.

The Road to New Orleans

We left around noon on Friday and made our first stop in Baton Rouge for dinner at Parrain’s Seafood Restaurant.

It was the perfect introduction to Louisiana cuisine. Fresh seafood, generous portions, and bold Cajun flavors made it well worth the stop. There is something about beginning a Louisiana road trip with a table full of seafood that immediately puts you in the right state of mind.

After dinner, we continued toward New Orleans and arrived at the Wyndham Hotel that evening.

Cocktails and Jazz in the French Quarter

Once we checked in, we headed out to experience New Orleans nightlife.

Our first stop was the famous Carousel Bar & Lounge. Located inside Hotel Monteleone, the bar slowly revolves beneath an ornate carousel canopy. It is elegant, unique, and one of those places that feels like classic New Orleans the moment you walk in.

We also visited Peychaud’s, a beautiful cocktail bar with a quieter, more intimate atmosphere. New Orleans takes its cocktail history seriously, and this was the perfect place to slow down and enjoy it.

From there, we went to Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub on Bourbon Street. The space is small, energetic, and wonderfully authentic. Listening to traditional jazz in a historic building while the sounds of Bourbon Street drifted in from outside was one of the highlights of our first night.

Exploring the Garden District

After brunch, we headed to the Garden District.

The neighborhood offers a completely different side of the city. Instead of the crowded streets and balconies of the French Quarter, the Garden District is filled with oak trees, historic mansions, wrought-iron fences, and beautiful gardens.

Walking through the area felt like stepping into another era. Every block seemed to feature another impressive home, hidden courtyard, or piece of New Orleans history.

We also stopped at Paradise Lounge, adding another taste of the city’s relaxed and colorful personality.

The French Quarter

By midday, we returned to the French Quarter.

There is always something happening there. Street musicians perform on the corners, artists display their work, horse-drawn carriages travel down the streets, and the smell of Creole cooking seems to follow you everywhere.

We wandered through the historic streets before having lunch at The Original Pierre Maspero’s on Chartres Street. Located in a historic building, the restaurant offered exactly what we were looking for—classic New Orleans dishes served in the heart of the Quarter.

Cruising the Mississippi River

In the afternoon, we boarded a steamboat operated by the New Orleans Steamboat Company.

Cruising along the Mississippi River provided a completely different perspective of the city. From the water, we could see the New Orleans skyline, the riverfront, and the enormous ships traveling along one of America’s most important waterways.

The sound of the paddlewheel, the breeze off the river, and the views of the city created a peaceful break from the excitement of the streets.

Beignets at Café du Monde

After the cruise, it was time for one of New Orleans’ most famous traditions: Café du Monde.

The warm beignets arrived covered in powdered sugar, along with cups of rich café au lait. Eating them is impossible without ending up covered in sugar, but that is part of the fun.

Café du Monde is busy, noisy, and wonderfully simple. There are no elaborate presentations—just fresh beignets, coffee, and a tradition that has become part of the identity of the city.

An Evening of New Orleans Music

Our evening began at Preservation Hall.

The historic venue is small and intimate, allowing the audience to sit just feet away from the musicians. There are no elaborate stage effects or distractions. The focus is entirely on the music.

Hearing traditional New Orleans jazz performed in such a historic setting was unforgettable. The musicians were talented, expressive, and clearly connected to the city’s musical heritage.

A City With Its Own Rhythm

New Orleans is not a city that can be experienced quietly.

It is found in the sound of a trumpet coming from an open doorway, the smell of seafood and spices drifting from a restaurant, powdered sugar falling from a beignet, and strangers dancing together in a crowded jazz club.

In only one weekend, we enjoyed seafood in Baton Rouge, cocktails in historic bars, brunch in a beautiful courtyard, a walk through the Garden District, a steamboat cruise, beignets at Café du Monde, and some of the best live jazz in the country.

New Orleans is lively, imperfect, historic, and completely unforgettable.

More than anything, the trip reminded us that the best travel experiences are not always found by rushing from one attraction to the next. Sometimes, they are found by slowing down, listening to the music, enjoying a great meal, and allowing the city to set the pace.

One Last Adventure Before Heading Home

On our drive home, we made one final stop that perfectly captured the wild beauty of southern Louisiana—a swamp tour with Cajun Encounters.

Located just outside New Orleans, the tour took us deep into the legendary Honey Island Swamp aboard a custom flat-bottom boat. As we glided through narrow bayous beneath towering cypress trees draped with Spanish moss, our captain shared fascinating stories about the swamp’s unique ecosystem, Cajun history, and the wildlife that calls it home.

It wasn’t long before we spotted one of Louisiana’s most famous residents—an American alligator basking along the shoreline. Throughout the tour we also saw turtles, egrets, herons, and other native wildlife while learning how this remarkable wetland has remained largely untouched for generations.

The peaceful beauty of the swamp was a perfect contrast to the energy of New Orleans. After a weekend filled with jazz clubs, historic streets, incredible food, and bustling crowds, drifting quietly through the bayou felt like the ideal way to slow down before beginning the drive home.

Looking back, the trip offered the very best of Louisiana—from fresh seafood in Baton Rouge and unforgettable nights in the French Quarter to world-class jazz, historic neighborhoods, and the tranquil beauty of the Honey Island Swamp. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable weekend.

Mexico City & Oaxaca: A Journey of Energy, Flavor, and Timeless Beauty

There are destinations you visit and then there are destinations that stay with you. Our recent family trip to Mexico City and Oaxaca was definitely the latter which was a perfect blend of world-class culture, unforgettable food, breathtaking landscapes, and memories made with family.

Mexico City: Where the World Meets Mexico

There is simply no city quite like Mexico City.

Every neighborhood pulses with life. Historic architecture stands beside modern skyscrapers, centuries-old traditions blend seamlessly with contemporary culture, and every street corner offers something new to discover.

Adding to the excitement was the FIFA World Cup. The city was alive with energy as fans from around the world filled plazas, restaurants, and public spaces. Flags waved from balconies, jerseys became everyday attire, and conversations in countless languages filled the air.

One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with my son, Daniel, at the FIFA Fan Festival in the Zócalo. Thousands of passionate fans gathered together to watch the matches on giant screens, celebrating every goal regardless of which country they supported. It wasn’t just about soccer—it was about experiencing the joy of people from every corner of the globe coming together through sport. Watching Daniel soak in that atmosphere made it one of those father-and-son memories we’ll both remember for years.

A Culinary Capital

Mexico City continues to prove why it’s one of the greatest food cities in the world.

From traditional street food to refined dining experiences, every meal was memorable. Whether enjoying perfectly prepared tacos, fresh seafood, artisan pastries, or expertly crafted cocktails, the city never disappoints.

Every meal reminded us that Mexican cuisine is far more than tacos and burritos—it’s a celebration of regional flavors, history, creativity, and hospitality.

Floating Above Ancient History

One of the most unforgettable mornings began before sunrise.

Watching dozens of colorful hot air balloons slowly rise into the morning sky before floating over the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán was simply magical. As the first rays of sunlight illuminated the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, the entire valley seemed to come alive.

From several hundred feet above, the scale and brilliance of one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations became impossible to fully comprehend. It was peaceful, surreal, and easily one of the most spectacular experiences of the entire trip.

A Day in Oaxaca: Culture Around Every Corner

While Mexico City offers endless excitement, Oaxaca offers something equally special—a slower pace where tradition, craftsmanship, and culinary excellence shine.

We spent an unforgettable day exploring some of Oaxaca’s most iconic destinations.

Hierve el Agua

Our first stop was Hierve el Agua, one of Mexico’s natural wonders. The mineral-rich springs have created spectacular rock formations that resemble frozen waterfalls cascading down the mountainside.

Standing at the edge while overlooking the valleys below made it easy to understand why this place has become one of Oaxaca’s most photographed landmarks.

Mitla

Next came Mitla, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico.

Unlike many ancient cities known for massive pyramids, Mitla is celebrated for its incredibly intricate geometric stone mosaics. Every wall tells a story through precise craftsmanship that has survived for centuries.

El Tule

No visit to Oaxaca is complete without stopping to admire the legendary Tule Tree.

Estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, this Montezuma cypress boasts one of the largest tree trunks in the world. Standing beneath its enormous canopy provides a humbling reminder of just how much history one living organism can witness.

Oaxaca’s Textile Traditions

One of the most enjoyable stops was visiting local textile artisans.

Watching traditional weaving techniques being practiced using methods passed down through generations gave us a greater appreciation for the artistry behind every rug, blanket, and handmade piece. These aren’t simply souvenirs—they’re works of art that preserve centuries of indigenous heritage.

Mezcal: The Spirit of Oaxaca

Of course, no visit would be complete without learning about mezcal.

Visiting a traditional palenque offered an inside look at the craftsmanship behind Oaxaca’s signature spirit—from harvesting agave to roasting, crushing, fermenting, and distilling. Sampling several varieties highlighted the remarkable diversity of flavors that make mezcal unlike any other spirit.

Dining That Defines Oaxaca

Oaxaca has earned its reputation as one of the culinary capitals of Mexico, and after this trip, it’s easy to understand why.

Two restaurants stood out above the rest.

Casa Oaxaca El Restaurante delivered an extraordinary dining experience, combining traditional Oaxacan ingredients with refined contemporary techniques. Every dish celebrated the region’s rich culinary heritage while presenting it in an elegant, unforgettable way.

Los Danzantes was equally exceptional. Creative presentations, complex mole sauces, locally sourced ingredients, and impeccable service made it another highlight of our culinary journey.

These restaurants weren’t simply meals—they were experiences that captured the soul of Oaxaca.

Final Thoughts

Mexico City and Oaxaca couldn’t be more different, yet together they create the perfect Mexican adventure.

Mexico City dazzles with its nonstop energy, world-class cuisine, rich history, and unforgettable World Cup atmosphere. Oaxaca slows everything down, inviting you to appreciate craftsmanship, tradition, extraordinary landscapes, and some of the finest food you’ll ever experience.

Most importantly, this trip reminded me that travel isn’t just about checking destinations off a list. It’s about sharing experiences with the people you love, creating memories that last far longer than any photograph.

Watching the excitement on Daniel’s face at the Fan Festival, floating over ancient pyramids at sunrise, tasting incredible food, and discovering the traditions of Oaxaca made this one of our family’s most memorable adventures.

Until next time, Mexico—you never disappoint.

A Christmas to Remember in San Antonio

This Christmas was extra special because Tanya’s family came down to spend the holidays with us. It was one of those trips where nothing felt rushed and everything revolved around being together, laughing, eating well and making memories that will stay with us for years.

We spent a few days in San Antonio by starting with simple pleasures. Walking along the River Walk during Christmas time is always a treat. The lights, decorations, and festive atmosphere made it the perfect place to slow down, talk, and truly enjoy being together as a family.

One of the highlights of the trip was our day at SeaWorld San Antonio. We arrived early and made a stop at the outdoor shopping area at La Cantera, where we walked around, did a little shopping, and enjoyed the fresh air before heading into the park.

At SeaWorld, we filled the day with rides, roller coasters, and shows. The kids did an impressive job managing some of the rougher rides and handled them like pros. The Christmas themed shows were a big highlight, especially the killer whale show featuring the orcas. It was festive, beautifully done, and truly captured the spirit of the season. You could tell everyone was enjoying themselves.

The following day, we drove back home, making the always anticipated stop at Buc-ee’s along the way. Snacks, laughs, and one last stretch before finishing the drive made it feel like part of the tradition.

All in all it was a wonderful Christmas. San Antonio gave us great food, fun experiences, and the perfect setting for quality family time. More than anything, it was about being together and enjoying the moment. A holiday we will always remember fondly.

Valentina’s Quinceañera: A Family Celebration Across Mexico

Celebrating Valentina’s quinceañera in Mexico City was everything we hoped for and more. Turning fifteen is such a meaningful milestone and we wanted to honor it in a way that brought together family, tradition, and unforgettable experiences.

The celebration began with a beautiful mass, grounding the day in gratitude and reflection. From there, we gathered at a rooftop banquet space overlooking the city, where the real celebration came alive. Surrounded by family we shared an incredible meal, laughter, and memories before dancing late into the night. Seeing Valentina celebrated with so much love was a moment we will always treasure.

Puebla: Timeless Beauty and Flavor

The following day, we rented a 15 passenger van and set off on a family road trip to Puebla. Puebla never disappoints. There is something truly magical about the city, from its stunning churches and historic streets to its deep cultural roots.

We spent the night there, touring iconic sites and soaking in the atmosphere. The food was outstanding, rich in flavor and tradition, and every corner of the city felt like a step back in time. It was the perfect continuation of a trip centered on family and shared experiences.

Veracruz: History by the Sea

From Puebla, we continued on to Veracruz, driving toward the Gulf Coast and staying at a seaside hotel along the shoreline. Veracruz offered a completely different energy: coastal, historic, and vibrant.

We explored the port and visited the historic fort where Hernán Cortés once established his stronghold. Walking through it was powerful and sobering, especially learning about the inhumane conditions prisoners once endured there. The architecture itself was remarkable, built using seashells, and standing strong against the sea for centuries.

Later, we enjoyed a wonderful meal along the waterfront at one of Veracruz’s well known restaurants, watching the waves and savoring the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Back to Mexico City and Xochimilco

We eventually made our way back to Mexico City, where we spent a few more days enjoying everything the city has to offer. One of the highlights was Xochimilco, where we floated along the canals together as a family. It was lively, colorful, and full of joy, the perfect way to slow down and simply enjoy being together.

Memories That Will Last a Lifetime

This trip was about so much more than travel. It was about celebrating Valentina, honoring tradition, and creating memories with family across some of the most beautiful and meaningful places in Mexico. Every city brought something unique, but the common thread was togetherness.

We all returned home with full hearts, incredible stories, and a deep appreciation for the moments we shared. We already look forward to the day we can go back and relive it all again.

A Magical Family Getaway to Xcaret Hotel Mexico

Our trip to Xcaret Hotel México was one of those vacations that stays with you long after you return home. From the moment we arrived everything felt thoughtfully designed to celebrate nature culture and family time. It was relaxing and adventurous all at once which is a rare combination.

Food Worth the Trip Alone

The restaurants were outstanding. Every meal felt intentional and beautifully prepared. Fresh seafood rich regional flavors and creative presentations made each dining experience memorable. There were options for everyone including the kids and somehow every restaurant managed to feel special without being overwhelming. I will be honest I enjoyed the food a little too much and I am still working off the extra weight from that trip.

Exploring the Parks and Resorts

One of the best parts of staying at Xcaret is the access to so many incredible parks. We spent time at Xel-Há floating through crystal clear rivers and soaking in the sunshine. We visited Pueblo and Los Enses which added a charming cultural and natural contrast to the trip. Each place felt different but connected by the same sense of wonder.

Swimming through the cenotes and natural rivers was unforgettable. The cool water winding through lush jungle was peaceful and exciting at the same time. It was the kind of experience where everyone slows down looks around and just enjoys being together.

An Unforgettable Night at Xcaret

One evening we went to Xcaret Park for dinner and the night show. The performance was absolutely amazing. The music the colors and the storytelling brought Mexican history and culture to life in a powerful way. The kids were mesmerized and so were the adults. It was one of those nights where everyone agreed it was truly special.

We laughed we ate well and we shared an experience that felt meaningful not rushed. The kids had a fantastic night and honestly so did we.

Until Next Time

As we headed home we all agreed on one thing. We hope to make it back one day soon. Xcaret Hotel Mexico gave us memories full of adventure relaxation and family connection. Next time I may pace myself a bit more at the restaurants but then again some trips are meant to be enjoyed fully.
