There are destinations you visit and then there are destinations that stay with you. Our recent family trip to Mexico City and Oaxaca was definitely the latter which was a perfect blend of world-class culture, unforgettable food, breathtaking landscapes, and memories made with family.
Mexico City: Where the World Meets Mexico
There is simply no city quite like Mexico City.
Every neighborhood pulses with life. Historic architecture stands beside modern skyscrapers, centuries-old traditions blend seamlessly with contemporary culture, and every street corner offers something new to discover.
Adding to the excitement was the FIFA World Cup. The city was alive with energy as fans from around the world filled plazas, restaurants, and public spaces. Flags waved from balconies, jerseys became everyday attire, and conversations in countless languages filled the air.
One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with my son, Daniel, at the FIFA Fan Festival in the Zócalo. Thousands of passionate fans gathered together to watch the matches on giant screens, celebrating every goal regardless of which country they supported. It wasn’t just about soccer—it was about experiencing the joy of people from every corner of the globe coming together through sport. Watching Daniel soak in that atmosphere made it one of those father-and-son memories we’ll both remember for years.
A Culinary Capital
Mexico City continues to prove why it’s one of the greatest food cities in the world.
From traditional street food to refined dining experiences, every meal was memorable. Whether enjoying perfectly prepared tacos, fresh seafood, artisan pastries, or expertly crafted cocktails, the city never disappoints.
Every meal reminded us that Mexican cuisine is far more than tacos and burritos—it’s a celebration of regional flavors, history, creativity, and hospitality.
Floating Above Ancient History
One of the most unforgettable mornings began before sunrise.
Watching dozens of colorful hot air balloons slowly rise into the morning sky before floating over the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán was simply magical. As the first rays of sunlight illuminated the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, the entire valley seemed to come alive.
From several hundred feet above, the scale and brilliance of one of the world’s greatest ancient civilizations became impossible to fully comprehend. It was peaceful, surreal, and easily one of the most spectacular experiences of the entire trip.
A Day in Oaxaca: Culture Around Every Corner
While Mexico City offers endless excitement, Oaxaca offers something equally special—a slower pace where tradition, craftsmanship, and culinary excellence shine.
We spent an unforgettable day exploring some of Oaxaca’s most iconic destinations.
Hierve el Agua
Our first stop was Hierve el Agua, one of Mexico’s natural wonders. The mineral-rich springs have created spectacular rock formations that resemble frozen waterfalls cascading down the mountainside.
Standing at the edge while overlooking the valleys below made it easy to understand why this place has become one of Oaxaca’s most photographed landmarks.
Mitla
Next came Mitla, one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico.
Unlike many ancient cities known for massive pyramids, Mitla is celebrated for its incredibly intricate geometric stone mosaics. Every wall tells a story through precise craftsmanship that has survived for centuries.
El Tule
No visit to Oaxaca is complete without stopping to admire the legendary Tule Tree.
Estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, this Montezuma cypress boasts one of the largest tree trunks in the world. Standing beneath its enormous canopy provides a humbling reminder of just how much history one living organism can witness.
Oaxaca’s Textile Traditions
One of the most enjoyable stops was visiting local textile artisans.
Watching traditional weaving techniques being practiced using methods passed down through generations gave us a greater appreciation for the artistry behind every rug, blanket, and handmade piece. These aren’t simply souvenirs—they’re works of art that preserve centuries of indigenous heritage.
Mezcal: The Spirit of Oaxaca
Of course, no visit would be complete without learning about mezcal.
Visiting a traditional palenque offered an inside look at the craftsmanship behind Oaxaca’s signature spirit—from harvesting agave to roasting, crushing, fermenting, and distilling. Sampling several varieties highlighted the remarkable diversity of flavors that make mezcal unlike any other spirit.
Dining That Defines Oaxaca
Oaxaca has earned its reputation as one of the culinary capitals of Mexico, and after this trip, it’s easy to understand why.
Two restaurants stood out above the rest.
Casa Oaxaca El Restaurante delivered an extraordinary dining experience, combining traditional Oaxacan ingredients with refined contemporary techniques. Every dish celebrated the region’s rich culinary heritage while presenting it in an elegant, unforgettable way.
Los Danzantes was equally exceptional. Creative presentations, complex mole sauces, locally sourced ingredients, and impeccable service made it another highlight of our culinary journey.
These restaurants weren’t simply meals—they were experiences that captured the soul of Oaxaca.
Final Thoughts
Mexico City and Oaxaca couldn’t be more different, yet together they create the perfect Mexican adventure.
Mexico City dazzles with its nonstop energy, world-class cuisine, rich history, and unforgettable World Cup atmosphere. Oaxaca slows everything down, inviting you to appreciate craftsmanship, tradition, extraordinary landscapes, and some of the finest food you’ll ever experience.
Most importantly, this trip reminded me that travel isn’t just about checking destinations off a list. It’s about sharing experiences with the people you love, creating memories that last far longer than any photograph.
